A. Brendon Collins Week 10

Image
This is a picture I took of the Christmas lights in my dorm. I really enjoy the very warm glow coming from these lights and the glare from each of them. The shadows cast by these lights are very uneven and feel looming to me.

Luis N. Week 10

Image
For this weeks post I decided to go with a picture I took while I went to Beyond NeverLand a music festival in San Bernardino. What I really enjoyed about this picture is the bright colors that makes the place light up and makes it look so alive even though at this time it is 1 AM. I also liked the colors of lights that were used they are colors that I would never think would go well together, but in this case they go along perfectly since it is a whimsical place and that makes the color choices so perfect and fitting for this event. What I also came to like was the usage of lantern lights on the trees it really brought another type of light sources which really was interesting to me and it something different since it also brought some warmness to the place and made the trees more distinguishable from the other lights that were set around the event.  Lastly, I also could not help but like the way the tower was shown it is not your ordinary tower when you see it in the day, b...

Spring! Spring! Spring! Will spring come for me again? Will beautiful flowers bloom in my heart again? I took this picture right after the last rehearsal of “The Unseen Hand”. This picture signifies the beginning of spring break and was really pretty in reality, whereas the picture doesn't do any justice. The sun looked reminded me of the PAR can in class that is shining bright into our eyes with a nice backdrop of the sky that gives you a nostalgic moment. I also love the ghostly-like circle in the middle of the picture, which I was not sure where it came from. But, it was certainly a magical moment to experience.

Donovan Dec Week 10

Image
It took me a while to find something worthwhile to photograph and I had to get a bit creative. I took this photo through a gel, standing with a tree behind me and my back to the sun. My immediate thoughts were how the colors were cold night time colors, with sunlight shadows through the tree. It feels super ominous to me, but also kind of beautiful. The actual scene in front of me without the gel was already super beautiful with greens and reds and the sunlight was vibrant and warm. The gel strips all warm colors from the photo. I can't even see the red tiles, they look weirdly bluish-grey. Kind of purple I guess. I originally had taken a bunch of photos through the tree before I chose to flip it around at take a photo of the shadow. I should take my color swatches outside and see what else I can make.

Kane Eddington week 10

Image
On this warm beautiful Saturday I decided to do some yard work and after I was done watering the lawn I noticed the interesting shadows my magnolia tree was making on the grass. I really like this picture due to how vibrant of a green the grass is compared to the muted and almost black the shadows make the other splotches of grass. What you really can’t  see in this picture is the water droplets that were reflecting the light from the sun. Overall this picture is pretty relaxing and calming to me and I think it’s cool how all of the shadows are connected to each other in some way

Jesus Cambero Lighting Blog Week 10

Image
For this week's blog, I took a picture of the view of my neighborhood. I have a lot of trouble sleeping at times, so I went for a drive a couple nights ago and went to a hill that I have been going to since I was in middle school and took a picture of it. This view looks amazing in daylight, but it looks marvelous when its night time. In the night time, You see lights coming from different places. Whether they are fluorescents, streetlights, traffic lights, porch lights, car lights, or lights coming from buildings, this pictures shows that they are working together to create this image. I thought this kind of aligns how we use certain lighting instruments to create the image we have on our heads in theatre. How we use parcans, lekos, shins, fresnels, and other instruments to create our image. I thought this would make a great post since we are in the verge of expanding our creative minds. Learning to use different instruments at a different intensity to tell our stories. We a...

When driving a few days ago, I noticed the lighting in the car to be particularly nice. Since it was cloudy that day, the sunlight that made it through the white clouds made the light in the car colder than it typically would be. My arm is backlit nicely and I find the way my scrunchie is lit to be particularly calming and pleasant. I really like the softness of all of the shadows in this picture. While it's not incredibly bright, everything in the photo is still visible. Simple, but surprisingly breathtaking! -Rosie

This is an image of me with an Ethiopian flag at the end of the La Marathon this image reminded me of a Stage left side light as it drew the edges of my body and illuminated the left side of my face. while shading in the undulation of the flag in my hand's as it billowed in the wind. Making the flag and my self a more three dimensional  image .

Donovan Dec Week 8

I set my calendar up wrong and screwed up the blog schedule for myself. Whoops. Back on track after this, 1 week late as a result. I wanted to take a photo of the composition of my current recording studio. I've gotten some gels for my lights but I figured I wouldn't have much to talk about the single composition, so i walked around my house to find the most interesting lighting, and found this. So the brushstroke is the same over the whole house. It's an overcast day and there is light coming from open windows just outside frame, even a skylight directly above. The walls are painted creamy orange and melon. I think those are the names of the paints, I painted the walls so. At the end of the hallway is a giant orange room. The hardwood is also a dark brown. It is quite a contrast in mood; the laundry room is harsh and clinical, whereas the hallway is warm and comforting. The light is coming at fairly extreme angles, and there are many interesting shadows in the laundry....

Arturo Gonzalez Week 8

Week 8  I have been very interested these past weeks with neon lights and capturing photos of different signs at night as the bending to the glass and color can vary and creative. The photo I took for this week's lighting blog was of a red neon light. This light caught my attention in how it had a dim glow bouncing around the space like on the ceiling and the curtains. This light source was different than the direct light I have observed from the stage lights in class, natural sunlight, and the lamps and lights I see everyday.

week 8 joseph gallegos

Image
This was taken in the photo lab at school. I wanted to try and capture how powerful the lights are but I don't think this picture really does it that well. It's pretty straightforward as far as why I took the photo, the long hallway covered with red lighting kind of gave me an unsettling feeling, like there was some type of emergency.

week #8 Dane Gbrayes

Image
I chose to use this image in my blog for today because of the vibrance of colors within it and the expansive meadowlike appearance that it captured. The Bush is lit from the left angle with multiple shades of color and works like a wash as it fills the cracks off the leaves allowing us to see all off the leaves and giving us a direct source of sunlight. The colors within the leaves also make a difference as the Amber's, Greens, and pinks remind me of different cuts of gel in a nice wash as the different colors spill over each other .

Michael O'Mahony Lighting Post 4 Week 8

Image
When I took this picture I was struck by the contrast and the colors of the street. I love the dark shadows and the depth it gives the image. It feels very large with the street in the back, and I love that it's lit by another color. The concrete steps are interesting as they both have patterns and the people on them are highlighted in interesting ways. I could take down some of the whites on the statue and straighten the picture out and I'm sure it would look great. Fun fact: I edited one person out of this image ooOoh bet you can't find where

Rosalie Dierking Week 8

Image
In my backyard there is a fence that catches the sun well during certain parts of the day. Light shines through the a few cracks in the fence in a pretty way. I love how the background with the trees is illuminated while the front of the fence has stayed shadowed. The trunk of the tree has also remained quite dark. Everything contrasts each other nicely! I also really like the different colors and textures that there are with the trees. The pockets of blue sky that show are fun. It's interesting to look at the different ways the tree is letting light through. -Rosie

Kane Eddington week 8

Image
On this beautiful and sunny day today, I was sitting in the living room and I noticed the cool effect that the window screen was making on the floor and my weird dog. In some places it is almost translucent but in others where it is folded and creased it creates a shadowy effect since light can not pass through as easily. This reminds me of in class when we put in gels and it is too big, you can’t really fold it over since it will change the characteristic of the light. This also reminds me of scrim used in theatre which I guess it sort of is since people looking in can’t really see us unless light is pointing outside.

Week 8 Luis N.

Image
For this week the photo I chose one which I took as I was strolling around Los Angeles. I really felt  calm and relaxed as I took this picture and I also liked the source of the sun and the shadows it creates with that of the objects around it. I really liked the radiance of the sun and looking at the picture just brings a lot of depth into  the scenery and makes things stand out with a sudden sense of warmth.

Brendon Collins Week 8

Image
I chose this picture I took on the way to the play because I saw how the sun was shining through the flag and it caught my attention. The sun designates a clear focus and draws attention to the center. Because of the sun being in the center it gives the sky a nice gradient effect. Because most of the lighting is caught behind the building it creates a nice definition of contrast with shadows and plays with silhouettes of the trees in the background.

Risa Kurosaki Week 8

Image
I chose this image because I really liked how the light source bounced off the reflective surface of the  area that had direct light. It makes the cat softer and more pronounced from the dark background. The color from the fabric of the upholstery also glows from the reflective light.

Christina Antolin Week 8

Image
This picture was taken in the hallway of my home. As I was walking to my room I noticed how nice the light from the spring door was hitting the wall. I also noticed that the wall looked like it had a hue of blue washing over it despite the wall being a peach/brown color . That is when I noticed that that blue was coming from the television that  my dad had on in the living room. I found the lighting in this image captivating because there were so many factors to it in such a small space. The metal design of the spring door worked as a gobo would on a fixture creating a pattern on  the wall and painting. The orange paint on the art piece is emphasized by the light of the sunlight coming in. The sun was actually setting around the time I took this picture so the angles were shaped by the suns location as well as the door.  Since the sun was setting the color of the light from the sun was more amber which I think helped create a warm feeling. The amber with the contrast o...

Patrick M. Kong Lighting Week #8

Image
I took this picture as I was walking towards the Theatre Department. The shape of the shadow from the tree caught my attention. It reminded me of Gobos from lighting class. I love how the leaves from the tree portrayed an odd shape from its shadows like an image of a monstrous light post or a scary looking bird. There is a lot more abstract commodities that can come along just by looking at this picture. Which is the exact reason why I took it in the first place. I can't wait to take more pictures that will give me more of this kind of inspiration and creative images in the future.

ThalĂa Hendricks Week 8

Image
I chose this image one day while I was walking to class. I saw it through the door window and adored the soft light coming through the blinds and how it warmly illuminated the room. I thought the amber hue to the room was so welcoming and calm. I also noticed that the different spaces between the blinds created different streaks of light but they all still seem very natural. Then the polished wood of the desks allowed the light to be smoothly seen but not shine as harshly as it would on metal. I wanted to take a picture of the room from a different angle but the automatic lights came on once I stepped foot inside. Entirely, I thought this image was very lovely.

Week 6 Brendon Collins

Image
I chose this picture that I took when I went to Myrtle Creek Botanical Gardens. It is a picture of my friend's stagecraft project and I chose this picture in particular because I really enjoyed how the sunlight shone on the moss on the roof of the house. The angle that the sunlight is coming at reflects in a way that makes the house look very homey and warm, welcoming and almost fairy like. Because of the angle of the house there is a shadow on the side and mostly only the front and top of the house are lit. The sunlight is incredibly bright in this picture and bounces off all the white and yellows on the house in a way that makes them look like they're glowing and I really enjoy that effect.

Donovan Dec Week 6

Image
I went to a surprise hockey game yesterday for my Dad's birthday. It's crazy the amount of Lighting design that goes into lighting the entire staples center arena for the duration of a Hockey match. I had pretty high seats and got to look right at the fixtures and everything. The photo I took was during the game, all the lights are pointed directly at the ice. It is very well lit from every available angle. You can see this massive glow all the way around the 1st rows of seats.  I mean it lights up the entire rest of the Arena. When other stuff is happening, not in-game all those lights do other stuff. I can't be very technical when they do so much. All those lights swing around and make such complicated patterns. They had mini games where they would use the light, one of em you'd roll a die and there would be spots of light in a parallel line. It was a race. They were using light in so many interesting ways. I'm also taking a history class and we just studi...

week 6 Dane Gbrayes

Image
I chose to use this picture because of its combination of light and dark contrasts the image above the clouds comes through and breaks up the monotonous grey of the rain clouds with a dark ocean blue. then at the lower half of the image right underneath the palm trees in the center. A bright white glimmers around the palms and the building allowing for an angelic glow of an LA skyline. The clouds within the image also do a lot to dull the color of the buildings and draw attention to the highlighting of the sun.

Christina A. Week 6 Post

Image
I took this photo in a post office in Pasadena  and I loved the very vintage look of the whole room.   The lighting in this room if I am being honest at first glance is pretty dull. As I started to look deeper at this image I found myself intrigued by the lights. The top lights coming from the right side ceiling come in from  a crevice. Creating a path for it to pass through. I really like how its so dominant creating a type of angelic opening on one side but a contrasting dark side on the left ceiling. I find this lighting to fit the day perfectly as it was gloomy and dark outside, but the sun had been out for an instant. I would use this type of lighting to create a glow around a piece of scenery in a production. I also really find it nice how the light reflects very nicely on the semi glossy floor. I think it is a cool effect that is found a lot in any kind of lighting. The brightness of the reflection practically changes the color f tha...

Rosalie Dierking Week 6

About a week or so ago, I visited the Barnsdall Art Park in Hollywood. Barnsdall Park is one of my favorite places to visit in Hollywood. The actual grounds as well as the views at the park are particularly breathe-taking. Whenever I feel myself disassociating or starting to become detached from my surroundings, I go to this park! Walking around in this small pocket of nature inside of the heart of East Hollywood keeps me present and introspective. While sitting on the grassy hills, I took this photo. I saw how the clouds block some of the sunlight on the hills and thought it was a particular pretty effect. I love how nicely the sky and the clouds hovering over the Hollywood sign blend together. The fronts of the various buildings that you see at the bottom of the photo are lit a lot by the sun, causing them to stand out. Through noticing these buildings and their varying architectural forms, I started to feel even more at home. I also like how the tree on the left is dark in comp...

Week 6 Post Luis N.

Image
As I was passing my time cleaning my parents apartment I happened to like how the light was playing nice role in the pillows, as if it were some gobo, but what surprised me the most was that as I was taking this picture I noticed that the color of the pillows changed as seen the pillow that looks red is actually a mocha color pillow and I saw that this was due to my parents white curtains and I was astonished as to how that fabric placed over made such a difference.

Kane Eddington week 6

Image
The other day I was opening up the shop in the early morning and as I opened the rolling doors bright sunlight pierced through into the shop. I really like the contrast between the light and dark, and as the door continued to open it was easy to see just how much more powerful the natural light was compared to the fluorescents.

Jesus Cambero-Elias Week 6

Image
For this weeks post, I decided to focus on the shadow the TV is giving to both our living room floor and my nephew. I was eating while he was watching The Incredibles 2 when I noticed the texture of light that was being reflected on the floor from the TV. It was pretty neat since it was a natural based effect. You can see that the resolution of color and picture from the movie is being bounced to the floor. However, my nephew's shadow is particular darker and more difficult to configure. What is also neat is that the windows are also adding a different texture/effect!

Week 6 Risa Kurosaki

Image
I captured this moment because the ominous presence of the clouds really stood out to me. The contrast between the bright blue sky with a few fluffy clouds and the abrupt presence of the dark stormy clouds is very striking. The way the dark clouds highlight the brightly sunlit houses underneath bring them forward in the image.

Lighting Post 3 Week 6

Image
I took this picture while climbing through the Northern LA Hills in my car, and pulled off near the summit to avoid running her too hot. There, I found a hill of sunflowers that stuck out against the gloomy weather. The greatest source of light in this image is the highway full of traffic, but I've shifted the focus to only capture the foreground, and could edit the sunflower to be a little brighter in post so it stands out more. This picture feels hopeful to me.

Patrick M. Kong Lighting Week #6

Image
I took this picture on February 27, 2019. This picture meant a lot to me this week because I had a rough week. On the day I took this picture, everything was out of the ordinary. I was late to my first class and one of my classmate decided to take a withdraw from the class. She was even part of my group, but her withdrawal from the class really impacted me on this day with everything that had been piling on. Being in the arena theatre for almost 2 hours and then stepping out to the sky was very bright that made me felt like I've walked pass the darkness and into the light of a new beginning.
