Donovan Dec Week 6

I went to a surprise hockey game yesterday for my Dad's birthday. It's crazy the amount of Lighting design that goes into lighting the entire staples center arena for the duration of a Hockey match. I had pretty high seats and got to look right at the fixtures and everything. The photo I took was during the game, all the lights are pointed directly at the ice. It is very well lit from every available angle. You can see this massive glow all the way around the 1st rows of seats.  I mean it lights up the entire rest of the Arena.

When other stuff is happening, not in-game all those lights do other stuff. I can't be very technical when they do so much. All those lights swing around and make such complicated patterns. They had mini games where they would use the light, one of em you'd roll a die and there would be spots of light in a parallel line. It was a race. They were using light in so many interesting ways.

I'm also taking a history class and we just studied the Romans, so being in a stadium like that way pretty cool.

  1. Awesome! There is a ton of work in lighting sports games and arenas and also ANYTHING on ice! Ice skating and Ice dancing etc etc. It's really neat to be able to look at an event that is essentially theater in the round, but so huge that you can still use lighting in fun, successful, exciting and entertaining ways! Nice commentary!

  2. I really love this image, one of my favorite things about it is the pure brightness of the ice. The lights cast at it cause a wonderful glow that fills the room. It must be so tricky lighting an arena like that, having to be careful not to blind anyone but illuminate everything. And especially during the interval shows! Even with all the stands and rows of people, it's hard to find shadows, unless we look down to see the backs of the people, showing again how the glow from the central arena really encompasses the room. Good shot, and looks like a good time!
