Rosalie Dierking Week 6

About a week or so ago, I visited the Barnsdall Art Park in Hollywood. Barnsdall Park is one of my favorite places to visit in Hollywood. The actual grounds as well as the views at the park are particularly breathe-taking. Whenever I feel myself disassociating or starting to become detached from my surroundings, I go to this park! Walking around in this small pocket of nature inside of the heart of East Hollywood keeps me present and introspective. While sitting on the grassy hills, I took this photo. I saw how the clouds block some of the sunlight on the hills and thought it was a particular pretty effect. I love how nicely the sky and the clouds hovering over the Hollywood sign blend together. The fronts of the various buildings that you see at the bottom of the photo are lit a lot by the sun, causing them to stand out. Through noticing these buildings and their varying architectural forms, I started to feel even more at home. I also like how the tree on the left is dark in comparison to the relatively bright background. I enjoy how the abundance of greenery contrasts the muted colors in certain areas of this image. The variations of lighting in this photo and the use of shadows makes it incredibly interesting to look at. If you cropped this photo in different ways, they would feel like completely different images. It's amazing to see the breadth of effects sunlight can have on a scene.

When looking at this photo, I was reminded of a quote from one of my favorite pieces of writing about Los Angeles. In Jenny Price's Thirteen ways of Seeing Nature in LA, she said
"Nature blesses L.A. Nature flees L.A. And nature returns armed... the city that destroyed nature and everything else becomes the city where nature roared back for revenge."

  1. OOOOOH I LOVE IT! Love the quote too and oh so fitting for the image! What a beautiful clear crisp day! The sunlight is really stunning! It catches all the colors of nature and industry in one fell swoop! I also love the huge shadow of the cloud, and upon closer inspection, it really makes you wonder what it would be like to be under that dark cloud while the rest of the world around you is in sunlight. Really great work!
