Arturo Gonzalez Week 6

Image
Week 6 This week's photo was a picture taken of my car dashboard. I was sitting in my car parked underneath a light as I was about to go into work. I found the combination of colors from where I was reclined very interesting. On the inside there was different Amber glows made by the light coming from above. Outside it was sunset, the sky had a blue ombre color that went from dark to light. The thing that came to my mind when I first saw this was the picture projects and how these saturated colors resembled that of the gels on the lighting fixtures in class and how it would look to replicate on stage. It is also interesting how this combination of natural light with  artificial light blended so beautifully. This moment was unique because it described a specific time of day seen in the shadows and light. It would have been something entirely different at a different time of day or different location. And yes to complimentary colors, I have enjoyed being more aware of light as it...

Arturo Gonzalez Week 4

So I was in my photography class and some of our assignment was playing with lights. And I found it so interesting how it tied in with our lighting class. I was able to understand lighting people with natural and artificial light, which I found important to what I want to do with lighting design on stage. I was interested in seeing how the variation of lights was caught on camera. Some classmates had set up two lights and had a person sit in-between. What was interesting about this lighting example was the different sources of lights. Behind the subject, there was one light that was warmer so it was kind of yellow, and on her lap, there was a light wand and with a blue and red gel in front of it, it made this specific color. The light that is coming from the back looks soft how it creates a halo outlining her head. And then there is the use of no light around which made the room dark. The two lights and their positioning made for a really wonderful photo. Not sure if this is up t...

I took this photo today at work and thought that the natural light blended well with the trucks outside.  I guess the light is being reflected off the trucks which makes the two white streaks across the floor. Also with the inside of the place, it can create a type of mood with the light and dark contrast.

While walking along the beach near the Santa Monica Pier, I stumbled on a house with very interesting architecture that reflected the sky and surrounding area in a really pretty way! In this photo you can see the sky and a building across the street being bent and thrown back against the building in certain locations. Since the blue tinted windows don't reflect the light as well as the mirrors it adds a contrast that I personally find really aesthetically pleasing. It's fascinating to look at the way the different materials reflect light. The choice they made to alternate between the different reflective materials leads to a striking result. The geometric walls and trim surrounding the windows make the scene seem even more abstract. What on some buildings could look harsh and distracting, looks modern and elegant. They took a chance with a risky material and it paid off stunningly. It's chaotic in a clean and controlled way that inspires me to want to play around with...

I chose this picture for my post this week because I loved the backlight on my cat and how it illuminated her fur. The way that the sunlight illuminates her fur also helps to define the shadows of her various layers of fluff. I also love how the sun shines through her ears and gives off a pink/orange glow. My window screen diffuses the light and gives off a nice gleam or glare that helps to solidify the look.

Kane Eddington week 4

Today at home I was walking past my parents room when I noticed the cool shadows that our magnolia tree was casting on the blinds, screen thing. What you cannot see in this picture are the shadows moving due to how windy it is right now but it kind of reminded me of different gobos. I really like the soft light coming in through the window screen and the darkness bordering the window frame making me feel calm and content

Luis Navarrete, Week 4 Post

For this week blog post I chose this picture, the reason I chose this picture is because it has a very dark projection. In actually this picture is right next to my room and the light that is being shown is that of the light that is coming from my room and that is being projected through the small cracks from the door that is slightly open. And with this light I found is so fascinating since I like the angle I took the picture making it very dark and spooky almost as if its warning someone to stay away and also playing with the amount of lighting I wanted to show gave it that scary feeling since if I showed a different angle or maybe got closer to show more light it might not have given that spooky or scary feeling.

Jesus Cambero-Elias Blog Post Week #4

Image
For this weeks posts, I decided not to focus much about a lighting aspect since I thought how a shadow of an object is fascinating. I was parked at a Chase bank waiting for my girlfriend to cash in her check. While waiting, I saw that there was a shadow on the floor and it reminded me how this can be a gobo as a special effect. I felt the shadow of this tree was a symbol or a representation of the crazy weather we have been getting recently. That even though some people may hate the obstacles that this rain has been giving them, it has been super helpful for the environment and the plants, such as this tree. This shadow can have different meanings given on the environment. When I took this photo, it was all sunny and amazing to be outside. However, let's say that I took this picture later on at night when its dark. The parking lot light would be shining on the tree, but that would be the only source of light in the parking lot. If I was there alone, I would be more on edge to be ...

This is a picture of light coming in through mini blinds I have on the windows in my room. There is a single lamp on the apartments across my street that comes on every night, shines its light through these blinds and lays a nice white line of light directly onto my eyeballs. I hope I can take a better photo and upload it tonight since this photo doesn't really show the line of light. Due to the way the light and blinds are set up, there is always a single line of light directly across my bed every night. It's probably not always exactly in my eyesight, but I can definitely remember all the times when It has happened. I'm sure that's confirmation bias but whatever. When I'm facing the other direction my eyes dilate, and then I turn over and get blinded. Its perfectly lined up. This light has purpose, it helps people walk up the stairs to their apartment, so its not like I can be mad about it. Maybe I should upgrade blinds.

This picture was quite striking to me one because it wasn't raining and secondarily because of the angle of light that was coming in from stage left. one of my favorite points of this image was the strong color differences that are made between the leaves that were lit by the sunlight and those which were not because of the differing in intensity with the hunter green of the lower leaves to that of the lime green leaves that came about as a byproduct of the sunlight. how I would recreate this the image on stage would consist of a gobo with a gel in it, allowing for the different color consistencies.

Patrick M. Kong Lighting Week #4

This picture was taken after the pouring rain on Thursday, February 14, 2019. I love how the sky was very dark and gloomy. The light from the sun beamed out from the corner of the building was very aesthetic to me. Even though the sun was soon covered by the dark clouds right after I took this picture, the light gave me a very warm feeling that struck my soul. The shadows that hit the buildings made the sun super bright and was pleasing to the eye. It was very rare to see a very pleasing picture of Downtown LA. What a unique and great way to remember Valentine's Day this year.

Christina Antolin Week 4 Post 2

I took this photo as I walked in the park. I decided to write about it because it is lighting that randomly caught my eye. This tree was being illuminated by a park light post located to the right of it. The angles specifically caught my attention. The way the focus seems to be put on the right side of the tree reminded of the activities done in class. I feel like this angle actually shows a happier form of a shadow. To me this tree looks like more of a symbol of enlightenment rather than a creepy tree in the night. I believe this is due to the brightness on the right highlighting the branches and trunk not leaving much hidden in the dark. The light helps extend the length of the branches showing off the trees size. However, the dark side does create a nice contrast but can not overpower the brighter side. I think that if the light was located anywhere else creating a different angle the vibe of this picture would have changed dramatically.

Thalia Hendricks - Week 4

Image
This image was taken in my living room while I was watching Project Runway. This specific spot in the room caught my eye since it was right besides a lamp I have on the wall. It was interesting because in person it has a more golden beige color and stood out to me. This specific area reminded me of the side lights in class and how we spoke about it being uplifting and light. With the drape, it highlights the thickness and weight of it which I thought was interesting. The shadows show exactly how many curves and creases it has compared to a softer material that would flow elegantly. You can also tell the dimension of the curtain since the light is also traveling behind it and is expressing a shadow on the ceiling. I thought it was interesting how even in a small part of my life, lighting and shadows play a major part on my perspective and perception of objects around me.

Lighting Post #2

Image
I got this shot in the valley of California City during a Wasteland Festival, and these were the main gates of BarterTown in the depths of night. The heat of the desert is still shown in the red and tan tones. The metal is outlined by the abyss of night and there is shadowy movement in the dark adding movement and depth to the picture. Then the distant lights add a drop of neon to the image. -Michael OMahony

Jesus I. Cambero-Elias Week #2 Post

Image
This weeks inspiration was found in the green room as I was dropping my stuff on the table before grabbing something to eat. When I got back, I noticed how the light was shining on the table and space where I left my stuff at. The light gave me a warm feeling as if I was welcomed to be at that spot. It made me feel comfortable, but also vulnerable at the same time. It felt sort of intimate for me since the light was only shining on the table as if it would be the center of attention. Or as if something important is going to happen at that. I also felt that this is the type of lighting that you would find at high-end restaurants, hotels, environments where that space wants you to stay and live in that fairy tale. So, you won't have to go back to reality.

Risa Kurosaki Lighting Week 2

Image
I loved how the open natural light looked from the restaurant's wide doors backlighting my friend and our food. It wasn't direct sunlight, the light was actually the sunlight being bounced off of the off white colored buildings across the street and the pavement outside. This combination made the colors pop out to me and gave me a clean, pleasant, and bright feel to it. It felt like contentment and cleanliness.

Week 2 (Christina Antolin)

Image
I decided on this picture because I thought it was interesting. I randomly saw this lighting in one of my classes that happens to be a computer-based course. To me, it really gave off this creepy hacker vibe with the light shining behind the computer screen. The greenish yellow hue came from a projector which was interesting because the screen was white, but reflected in this different shade of color. I feel like this represents the gloomy day or someone doing sketchy stuff on a computer. The bright square on the computer also pulls some focus to the screen which would work to pull attention if someone was actually doing something important on the screen. Overall I thought it was cool how the shades worked with the theme of the room.

Arturo Gonzalez Week 2 Light Post

Image
I was in class working on assignments when I noticed how the sun was coming in through the blinds on this rainy cloudy day. Between the gaps, the sun gave off an interesting light where the light was attempting to creep in. Behind the blinds, the glass windows are another layer the sun is going through. The light is separated into horizontal lines where if you see close in front the lines appear close together and from away they look more separated. To me I imagined an interesting light backdropped this way while performers are in the front. This would be an interesting light design to replicate and play around with on stage.

Week 2- Kane Eddington

Image
Last night me and a few others finished building this set for a high school and I really like how many different shadows are all around it due to the different angles of light. I think my favorite though is the center piece where you can see some of the shadows overlapping to create different levels of darkness. I also really like the contrast of the white set and the specific spots of darkness that really helps add a sense of depth to it.

Lighting Blog 1 Donovan Dec

My mother bought me a Himalayan Pink Salt Lamp for Christmas. I have a recording studio in my garage, and other than my computer screen this is the only light I have to see my room. Its a small bulb in a giant rock of salt. It tastes like salt if you lick it. The rock is about 6 inches tall. They say its Pink, but I see more orange especially in the thicker parts farther from the bulb. It lights up the foam and the metal of my computer. My computer screen is often white and harsh so it's a good soft addition. The light isn't very strong, but casts a faint orange/pink glow all over the entire room. When I turn it off it definitely makes a difference.

Week 2 lighting post

Image
I was driving to my friend’s house and stopped at a red light. I saw this taco stand that’s always by his house and thought it would work for this blog, mainly because of the purple light, that’s what caught my attention. I guess the purple light could be considered a sort of spot light because of how it is the most vibrant. The other lights on the truck don’t seem to be serving the same purpose as the purple light being that they seem to be serving more of a functional role rather than spectacle, which is what I think the purple light’s role is. I got a weird dream-like feeling from looking at the taco truck, the red chair and other red objects also contrasted well, I think, with the light.

Week #2 the golden Hour Dane gbrayes

Image
I was walking to rehearsals For Antigone at about Four or five o'clock and the sun was shining with this radiant gold tinge. Similar to that of a source four with a gold gel in it. what I enjoyed about the light was the warmth that it had to it and the extreme saturation of color in contrast to bright white sunlight. I also noticed that the light was also great at focusing on whatever it was touching which is evident on  the contrast between my chest and the rest of my body and on the bars of the bridge behind me, where only the bottom half is illuminated and the top half is left dark which pulled focus to the illuminated object or person.

While I was studying I noticed my dragon figurine's scales were reflecting my the light from my string lights in a cool way. I chose this picture because I really enjoy the warm glow effect that Christmas lights have and the way it shines on the shell of the dragon. I also found the shadows that the light made incredibly pretty and it helped to sculpt the figurine in a nice way. There is also a blue backlight coming from my computer that gives the model more dimension, which reminds me of how in theater we have to light the actors from multiple angles to make them look real.

Lighting Post #1

I've never used Blogger so I hope this is posting correctly into the forum, and in all RAW image quality it was shot in. This mixture of lighting really caught my eye during the MultiCult's performance at the Lyric Hyperion. My eyes first are caught by the saxophone player, where most of the light falls. The same light on the sax also lights up the piano player in the back, but its hard to see most of him as he's hidden. In a sense, the woman in the foreground is hidden too. She's lit from a different light, a deeper red that comes from the left of the camera. This mixture invokes some sense of emotion and seperation between the two characters. -Michael O'Mahony

Patrick M. Kong Lighting Week #2

Image
Today I stayed at home due to rainy weather. As I was walking downstairs to the living room I noticed a shining glimmer light shooting at the floor that bounced off a wall. I took a picture of it because it reminded me of working with lights at the backstage. The picture itself may not seem that artistic, but if you look at it there are many abstract themes that pop up. It brought my back to my past when I was a kid, where we would take some of the most simple things and create a story that tells a thousand words.

Rosalie Dierking - Lighting Post week 2

The other day I went to a concert at LA Live in downtown and when I went to use the bathroom in one of the nearby hotels, I had to go through this hallway. I was taken aback by how simple and elegant the lighting was. The way the white marble flooring reflects the geometric lights is really gorgeous! I love the choice of warm colors they made and how it make the room feel very cozy despite geometric designs typically making architectural lighting feel more harsh and uninviting (compared to other softer lighting choices). My favorite part of this whole hallway is how they managed to light it in a way that draws your eyes to the painting at the end which helps make it the focus piece of the room. -Rosie

Thalia Hendricks Week 2

Image
During this week I was waking up early and leaving my home around 6a.m. for an early class. On one of the days I stopped and looked across the street and saw the following; a streetlamp lighting part of two cars and a branch from a tree. My immediate thought was that it was oddly artistic while still entirely simple. I had a melancholy and calm feeling while looking at it. I took some time to stare at the light before I took the picture since I was observing the street light's objective in this image. I realized even though it was what my eyes were drawn to, it wasn't the only bright light in the picture. T he homes below the street light really bring a sharp alerting feeling into the image because of its bright white shade, yet for me, it still wasn't the first thing I looked at since my immediate focus was the warm street light. The sky was well lit even thought the sun hadn't fully come up yet. The blue shade was cold and calmed the air and the warm bright ...

WEEK 2 Lighting Blog LUIS NAVARRETE While taking this picture I felt a lot of things running through my mind. For one I see two perspective, I see one where we can see far in the distance a clear blue sky that the rainy clouds have not hit and in that you can see in the edge of the building the rays of the sun shining on that side.  The second thing that came to my mind is that looking deeper to the edge on the far right of the photo it gets darker and you can even see the  darkness the clouds bring to this photo and all it surrounds. As this darkness hits everywhere except where the sky is still blue and the rays of sunshine reflect upon,  it shows its reflection on the pavement showing the purity that exist that we can grasp or reach to. In that I felt peace and beauty along with that I felt that even with all that goes in this world referencing that the darkness is what is wrong and as it surrounds us there is that clear r...
